Substance Use and Mental Health Symptoms Can Affect Each Other

It is not always clear whether substance use is worsening your mental health or whether difficult symptoms are making alcohol or drugs more appealing. Anxiety may lead you to drink to relax or sleep, while depression can make isolation and substance use harder to interrupt. At the same time, continued alcohol or drug use can intensify anxiety, low mood, sleep problems, and emotional instability.

That relationship can also change over time. What began as occasional drinking to manage stress, for example, may eventually contribute to the anxiety or sleep problems you were trying to relieve. Trauma-related symptoms can create similar patterns when substances become a way to avoid distressing thoughts, emotions, or memories.

You do not need to determine which condition came first before seeking treatment. Our clinical team looks at how your symptoms and substance use interact so treatment can address the patterns keeping both problems going.

Common Questions About Dual Diagnosis Treatment Near Lewis Center, OH

  • Do I need a mental health diagnosis before starting dual diagnosis treatment?

No, you do not need an existing mental health diagnosis to begin treatment. We assess your substance use, current symptoms, psychiatric history, and previous treatment to determine what concerns need to be addressed together.

  • Can I take medication for anxiety or depression during addiction treatment?

Yes, psychiatric medication can be part of addiction treatment when clinically appropriate. Our clinical team reviews your symptoms, substance use history, current medications, response, and side effects when making medication decisions.

  • Can dual diagnosis treatment help if previous addiction treatment did not work?

Yes, dual diagnosis treatment may be appropriate if mental health symptoms are complicating your recovery. We review your previous treatment, relapse patterns, substance use, and psychiatric symptoms to identify what still needs attention and determine the appropriate treatment plan.

  • Can my family participate in dual diagnosis treatment?

Yes, family members can participate when their involvement supports your treatment, and you provide appropriate consent. Our clinical team may use family counseling to address communication, boundaries, relationship concerns, and support for recovery at home.

  • Can I receive dual diagnosis treatment if I am already seeing a therapist or psychiatrist?

Yes, already receiving mental health care does not prevent you from entering dual diagnosis treatment. We consider your existing treatment, medications, current symptoms, and substance use when deciding how your mental health care should fit into the overall treatment plan.
