What Happens the First Week of Alcohol Rehab?
Medically reviewed by The Ridge Ohio clinical team · Updated
The first week of alcohol rehab includes a medical intake assessment, medically supervised detox if needed, and your first individual and group therapy sessions — which begin in earnest on day two. Physically, it is the hardest week, as your body adjusts to not drinking. Most clients settle by day four or five. At The Ridge Ohio, the goal of day one is not to start programming — it is to get you comfortable, oriented, and safe.
01 What Happens on Day One?
02 What Does the Rest of the First Week Look Like?
You attend your first full group sessions — psychoeducation, clinical skills, peer discussion — and meet one-on-one with your primary therapist for the first time. If you are in medical detox, nursing monitors your vitals around the clock and adjusts medications as needed.
Most clients are more physically and mentally regulated by now. Therapy shifts toward trauma-informed processing, pattern recognition, and behavioral interventions. It is also when most people start to feel less like a stranger in the building.
The structure that felt unfamiliar starts to feel grounding. The peer group that seemed intimidating starts to feel like a resource. Most clients describe the end of their first week the same way: they didn’t know what to expect, but it felt like the right place to be.
03 What Do Most People Get Wrong About Their Stay?
It’s not what you’ve seen on TV
The environment at The Ridge is structured and private, not confrontational — day one is designed to feel calm, not clinical.
You’re not giving up control
Rehab is voluntary. Knowing you can leave makes staying a choice, and most people who make it through day one choose to stay.
The people around you are people like you
Executives, physicians, attorneys, and high-functioning professionals make up a significant part of residential treatment populations.
The environment is part of the care
The Ridge Ohio’s 51-acre estate in Milford wasn’t chosen for aesthetics — reduced stimulation and physical space directly support early stabilization.
