How Drugs and Mental Health Feed Each Other

THE TWO-WAY STREET

Drug use and mental health pull on each other

For most people with a substance use disorder, drugs and mental health aren’t separate problems — they drive each other. People often use to quiet anxiety, depression, or trauma, and the drug deepens those same conditions over time. In treatment, as use stabilizes, the underlying issues come into focus. That’s why treating one without the other usually fails — and why integrated dual diagnosis care is built into how we treat substance use disorders at The Ridge.

    Drugs We Specialize in Treating

Dependence on different substances calls for different clinical approaches — detox protocols, medications, and therapy all shift depending on the drug. The Ridge has clinical experience treating dependence across the substances people most often struggle with:

    • Opioids and fentanyl
    • Heroin
    • Cocaine and stimulants
    • Methamphetamine
    • Benzodiazepines and sedatives
    • Prescription medications
    • Marijuana

If the substance you’re worried about isn’t on this list, call us — we treat dependence on more than we can list here.

    Drug Addiction in Cincinnati FAQ

    • What levels of care do you offer beyond residential rehab?

You’ll typically step down from inpatient rehab to our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and then to the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). PHP is full-day clinical care on campus; IOP is several sessions per week while you live off-site. Many people then transition to our Outpatient Program (OP)—a lighter schedule of individual counseling and group work that fits around work and home. Because your care stays with the same team, we adjust your individualized plan as you progress—a patient-centered continuum, not one-size-fits-all. After that, our 52‑week Aftercare Program keeps you connected and supported.

    • What happens during the detoxification process?

You start in our on‑campus detox facility with 24/7 support from addiction‑specialist physicians and registered nurses. We monitor withdrawal symptoms hour by hour and use FDA‑approved medications and medication‑assisted treatment when clinically appropriate to keep you safe and as comfortable as possible. As you stabilize, your team updates your individualized plan and transitions you—on the same campus with the same clinicians—into residential rehab, PHP, or IOP based on your clinical needs.

    • Do you treat co-occurring mental health disorders?

Yes. If you’re dealing with anxiety, depression, PTSD, or bipolar disorder along with substance use disorders, we treat both together. Our integrated dual diagnosis model combines psychiatric care and medication management with trauma‑informed therapy and addiction treatment. Your individualized treatment plan is coordinated by licensed healthcare providers—psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, and therapists—and includes individual counseling, group therapy, and peer support.

    • How are family members involved, and what support continues after discharge?

Family members are involved from the start through education and guided sessions to rebuild trust and set healthy boundaries, with weekly programming (Tuesday/Saturday), free virtual meetings, and a family support specialist. After discharge, our 52‑week Aftercare Program starts the week you leave—weekly group therapy in Milford plus individual sessions (in-person or telehealth services)—and our Alumni Program and Alumni Community add connection with monthly meetings, a weekly virtual support group, and year‑round events.

    • Does insurance cover drug treatment at The Ridge?

Most major PPO plans cover treatment at The Ridge, including out-of-network benefits, under federal mental health parity law. The Ridge is primarily out-of-network, which is what sustains its staffing and clinical quality. The real question isn’t whether you’re covered — it’s what percentage and what your out-of-pocket looks like. Verification confirms exactly what your plan covers.

    • Can professionals get treatment without losing their job or license?

In most cases, yes. The Ridge’s professionals program is designed around careers, with structured access to phone and laptop for clients who need to stay connected, and care aligned with monitoring programs like OPHP. Confidentiality is protected by federal law. The team also helps clients plan what to tell employers and colleagues, so getting help doesn’t mean giving up what they’ve worked for.
