Partial Hospitalization Program, Landen, OH
You may be at a point where a weekly therapy appointment is not helping enough, but leaving home for residential treatment does not feel necessary either. Maybe you are struggling with cravings after detox, drinking again despite trying to stop, or finding that anxiety, depression, or stress keeps pulling you back into the same pattern. PHP can provide more support without requiring you to live at the center.
At our Milford campus, you spend much of the weekday focused on recovery and return home afterward. This can give you the time and clinical support to make meaningful progress while remaining connected to your family and everyday life.
PHP is not the right level of care for everyone, which is why we first assess what kind of support you actually need. When PHP is appropriate, our addiction treatment center near Landen provides intensive daytime care without requiring you to stay on campus overnight.
PHP Is Appropriate When You Can Safely Spend Nights at Home
Wanting to stay at home does not automatically mean PHP is the right choice. Before recommending it, we need to know that you can get through evenings and nights without the medical monitoring or round-the-clock support provided in residential treatment. We look at withdrawal risk, current substance use, mental health symptoms, recent relapse, and what has happened during previous attempts to recover with less support.
What you are returning home to matters as well. Someone living with a supportive spouse in a substance-free home may be able to manage the hours between treatment days differently from someone returning to active substance use, severe family conflict, or limited recovery support. We consider whether you have reliable support and enough stability outside program hours to make daytime treatment a safe option.
PHP can also be the right next step after detox or residential treatment, but completing a higher level of care does not automatically qualify someone to step down. If you still need overnight monitoring or more support than PHP can provide, we may recommend continuing residential care. If you can safely manage more independence and do not need full clinical days, our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) or outpatient treatment may be a better fit.

Full Clinical Days Provide More Than Weekly Therapy
When treatment happens only once or twice a week, a lot can take place between appointments. You may leave a session determined not to drink, then struggle two nights later when work stress, poor sleep, or anxiety returns. In PHP, there is much less distance between what happens in your life and the next opportunity to work through it with your treatment team.
That additional clinical time also allows us to work on several parts of the problem at once. A client may spend time examining the thinking that leads back to alcohol, practicing ways to manage strong emotions, addressing relationship patterns in group therapy, and meeting individually with a therapist. Psychiatric care and medication management can also be incorporated when they are part of the treatment plan.
The goal is not to fill the week with more appointments. It is to give you enough concentrated treatment to understand the patterns that keep pulling you back and begin changing them while you still have substantial clinical support. For someone who has spent months trying to solve the problem through weekly therapy, medication visits, or repeated attempts to stop alone, that difference can be significant.

Addiction and Mental Health Progress Can Be Followed Throughout the Week
Anxiety, depression, poor sleep, and other symptoms do not always respond predictably once alcohol or drugs are removed. Someone who has been drinking to fall asleep may initially feel more anxious without it. Another person may discover that the depression they blamed on substance use is still affecting them after they stop. PHP gives our team repeated opportunities during the week to see how these symptoms are changing rather than relying on a single appointment.
That closer contact is especially useful when medications are part of treatment. Our psychiatric and clinical providers can follow how you are responding, consider side effects or new concerns, and make changes when clinically appropriate. What you report in therapy, how you are functioning during the week, and changes in cravings, mood, or sleep can all contribute to those decisions.
This can bring clarity to people who have spent years treating each problem separately. Instead of assuming that every difficult symptom is caused by addiction or that substance use is simply a reaction to anxiety or depression, we can evaluate both together over time and determine what still needs attention as recovery progresses.
The Weekday Schedule Requires Real Planning Around Work and Family
PHP gives you more freedom than residential treatment, but it is still a significant daytime commitment. At our Milford campus, programming generally runs Monday through Friday for about 25 to 30 hours each week. Most days run from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., while Tuesday programming runs from 1:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and can include family programming.
For someone managing a career, children, or both, that schedule usually requires more than fitting treatment between existing commitments. A professional may need to arrange time away or temporarily reduce work responsibilities. A parent may need help with school transportation, childcare, or other routines that normally fall during treatment hours. Trying to maintain a normal full-time workday alongside PHP can leave too little room for the level of treatment that brought you here in the first place.
Those practical demands are worth considering before treatment begins. The goal is to create enough room in your life for PHP to function as intensive treatment, rather than turning recovery into one more obligation squeezed between meetings, deadlines, and responsibilities at home.
Evenings at Home Become Part of the Treatment Process
Going home each evening means recovery has to begin working outside the treatment setting before PHP is over. You may have dinner in the same kitchen where you used to drink, face an argument without reaching for a substance, or lie awake with the anxiety that once led you to take more medication. Instead of waiting until treatment ends to encounter those situations, you begin dealing with them while you still have substantial support during the week.
What happens at home can then become useful clinical information. If a craving caught you off guard, a conversation with your spouse escalated, or work stress brought back the urge to use, you can bring that experience into treatment the next day. Your team can help you understand what happened, work through a different response, and identify problems that may not have been obvious in the treatment setting.
There can also be progress worth examining. Getting through a difficult evening without drinking, setting a boundary you previously avoided, or asking for help instead of isolating shows where new skills are beginning to hold. PHP gives you repeated opportunities to move between treatment and everyday life while there is still time to learn from both.
Progress Determines When PHP Can Step Down
Finishing PHP is not about reaching a preset number of weeks. We want to see whether the problems that required near-daily treatment can now be managed with fewer clinical hours. Changes in cravings, psychiatric symptoms, sleep, relapse risk, and your ability to follow a recovery plan all help us judge whether that transition makes sense.
Progress also needs to hold as you take more responsibility for your recovery. We look at whether you can recognize problems earlier, use the strategies developed in treatment, ask for support when you need it, and maintain stability without as much clinical contact. If reducing support would leave important risks insufficiently managed, continuing PHP may still be appropriate.
When near-daily care is no longer necessary, IOP is often the next step and provides fewer treatment hours each week. Some clients may be ready for outpatient care instead. The decision is based on how you are functioning and what support you still need, not simply on a target discharge date or a desire to get back to a normal schedule.
