Addiction and Mental Health Are Treated as Connected Problems 

For some professionals, substance use becomes part of how they cope with the demands of the job. Alcohol may become a way to switch off after a high-pressure day, while stimulants may be used to maintain performance or sedatives to manage anxiety and sleep. When those patterns develop alongside depression, trauma, burnout, or other mental health concerns, treating substance use without addressing what continues to drive it can leave important recovery risks unresolved.

Our clinical team evaluates these concerns together rather than assuming every symptom has the same cause. Assessment can help identify how substance use, psychiatric symptoms, medical concerns, sleep, stress, and other factors are interacting. Treatment may then incorporate psychiatric care, medication management, individual or group therapy, CBT, motivational interviewing, family work, or other approaches based on the client’s needs.

For a physician dealing with burnout or an executive drinking heavily to manage stress, recovery involves more than stopping substance use. Treatment also needs to help the client develop healthier ways to manage the pressures and symptoms that will still exist when they return to professional life. 

Professional Peers Can Address Pressures That General Groups May Not Share 

Professional responsibility can create recovery issues that are difficult to separate from the job itself. A physician may be responsible for patient safety and have access to medications, while an attorney or executive may make high-stakes decisions that affect clients, employees, or an organization. Leadership can also be isolating when someone is accustomed to being the person others rely on rather than the person asking for help.

Our Professionals Program creates opportunities to work alongside peers who understand what it means to recover while carrying significant professional responsibility. The value is not that everyone has the same occupation or experiences the same pressures. It is being able to discuss concerns such as professional identity, reputation, leadership expectations, patient or client responsibility, and the difficulty of stepping away from a demanding role without having to explain why those issues matter.

Professional peer support also creates space to examine beliefs that can interfere with treatment. Someone accustomed to solving complex problems independently may struggle to accept help, disclose difficulties, or acknowledge limits without seeing those actions as professional weakness. Working through those patterns in treatment can help professionals ask for support, recognize limits, and respond to problems before maintaining appearances becomes more important than recovery. 

Treatment Can Be Coordinated With Professional Monitoring Requirements 

For a licensed professional, entering treatment may involve responsibilities beyond attending therapy and following a recovery plan. A physician, dentist, veterinarian, or other monitored professional may already be working with a licensing board, OhioPHP, employer, or professional health program that requires an evaluation, documentation, or ongoing monitoring. Those requirements need to be understood early so clinical care and professional obligations do not develop as two disconnected plans.

When outside coordination is needed, we can communicate with the appropriate organization and provide relevant treatment documentation with the necessary authorization, unless disclosure is otherwise required by law. Our 72-hour assessment may also be used when a professional needs a formal evaluation of substance use, co-occurring conditions, detox needs, and appropriate level of care. Because requirements can differ by profession and individual case, professionals should confirm that an evaluation or treatment arrangement meets the current requirements of their specific board or monitoring program.

Treatment and monitoring also serve different purposes. Our clinical team determines what care is appropriate based on the client’s health, safety, and recovery needs, while licensing boards and monitoring organizations make their own decisions about professional status and compliance. Participation in our Professionals Program therefore cannot guarantee license protection, prevent disciplinary action, or determine when someone will be cleared to return to practice.
