What Is Aftercare, and Why Does It Matter for Families?
Medically reviewed by The Ridge Ohio clinical team · Updated
What is aftercare, and why does it matter so much?
Aftercare is the structured support that continues after residential treatment ends — ongoing therapy, group sessions, check-ins with the treatment team, and stepped-down care. For families, it’s the difference between “they went to rehab and came home fixed” (which doesn’t happen) and “we have a plan with professional support for the next year” (which works). The Ridge runs a 52-week aftercare program that picks up where residential treatment leaves off.

02 How Does Aftercare Involve the Family?
Client-focused care, with family support available
The weekly aftercare group is for the client — it’s their space to stay connected and accountable. For families who want their own ongoing support, The Ridge offers family counseling separately. Both matter: recovery holds better when the family is also doing its own work, including rebuilding a marriage after rehab where that’s part of the picture.
- Weekly client group — masters-level clinician, virtual or in person
- Family counseling available as a separate service
- The family’s own work strengthens the client’s recovery
- Call the clinical team when things get hard at home
03 Why Does Aftercare Matter?
The initial residential days build the foundation. The months that follow determine whether it holds — and relapse risk is highest early, exactly when aftercare is most active. If it happens, relapse during aftercare is something the program is built to catch. See our treatment programs for how the levels connect.

04 Aftercare at The Ridge Ohio FAQ
What families ask most about the year after treatment — part of the broader set of more questions families ask.
-
Is aftercare included in the cost of treatment?
At many facilities, aftercare is part of the residential package. At The Ridge, the 52-week aftercare program extends well beyond residential care. Ask admissions exactly what’s included in your plan and what, if anything, is billed separately — they’ll give you the specifics for your situation.
-
Does my spouse have to participate in aftercare?
It’s strongly recommended but ultimately their choice. Staying engaged is one of the strongest predictors of lasting recovery from alcohol addiction. Families who stay involved in their own support alongside their partner tend to see better outcomes than those who treat homecoming as the finish line.
-
What happens if they stop going to aftercare?
Disengaging from aftercare is itself a warning sign. Good programs reach out when someone drops off, and the weekly group is designed to catch struggles early. As a family member, you can also contact the treatment team if you’re worried — including about relapse during aftercare.
-
Can I get support without my partner?
Yes. The Ridge offers family counseling as a separate service, and Al-Anon and family therapy provide ongoing structure for you regardless of what your partner does. Your recovery from this doesn’t depend on theirs.
-
How long should aftercare last?
At minimum, 90 days — but longer is better. The Ridge program runs a full 52 weeks, and research consistently shows that longer engagement in aftercare correlates with better long-term sobriety. The first year is when the structure matters most.
