What happens if you relapse after rehab?

02 What to Do Immediately After a Relapse
Tell someone before secrecy turns a slip into a spiral.
The instinct to hide a relapse is the most dangerous part. A single episode doesn’t undo your progress — but secrecy almost always does. Call your therapist, your sponsor, your aftercare coordinator, or admissions at (513) 457-7963. The conversation is what gets you back on track.
- Call your therapist or sponsor first
- Tell your aftercare coordinator
- Don’t try to “wait it out” alone
- Reach out before the next drink or use

04 Alcohol Relapse FAQ
-
Does relapse mean treatment failed?
No. Addiction is a chronic condition, and relapse rates are comparable to diabetes and hypertension. Relapse is information about what needs to be adjusted in the recovery plan — not a verdict on whether recovery is possible. -
Will my therapist or aftercare team judge me?
No. The clinical team expects relapse as a possibility and is trained to respond without judgment. Honesty is what gets you back on track — secrecy is what makes a slip dangerous.
-
Do I have to go back to residential treatment?
Not necessarily. The level of care is determined clinically using ASAM Criteria. Many relapses are addressed by stepping up to PHP or IOP, adjusting medication, or increasing therapy frequency. Full residential readmission is recommended only when the relapse is severe or sustained.
-
Can I re-enter treatment at The Ridge?
Yes. Alumni are welcomed back, and admissions is typically faster because clinical history is already on file. Call (513) 457-7963 to start a re-admission conversation.
-
Will insurance cover a second round of treatment?
In most cases, yes. Insurance covers treatment based on medical necessity, and a relapse that requires a higher level of care generally meets that standard. Verify your benefits or call admissions for a free coverage check.
-
What if I disengage from aftercare entirely?
The Ridge’s aftercare and alumni teams reach out proactively when someone disengages — we don’t wait for the call. The goal isn’t pressure or monitoring; it’s keeping the door open so you can re-engage when you’re ready.
Relapse isn’t the end. The conversation is the next step.
