We Decide Who Should Be Involved Based on Your Situation

Family counseling does not mean bringing everyone in your family into treatment. The right person might be your spouse or partner, a parent, an adult child, a sibling, or someone else who plays an important role in your life. We look at the relationship, what is happening between you, and whether involving that person would actually help with your treatment goals.

We also consider what you are comfortable discussing and whether having that person involved would be productive. In some situations, working with one person may make more sense than bringing several relatives into the same conversation. Family involvement should have a clear purpose, not happen simply because someone is related to you.

That can be especially relevant when you leave treatment in Westerville and return to everyday life in Flint. The people around you may be part of your daily routine, but that does not automatically mean they need to participate in counseling. We involve family when their participation can contribute meaningfully to the work you are doing in recovery.

Common Questions About Our Family Counseling Near Flint, OH

  • Is family counseling confidential?

Yes. Participating in family counseling does not automatically give your relatives access to everything you discuss in treatment. You decide whether family members can be involved, except where disclosure is required by law. Your treatment team considers what information is relevant to the family work and what can be shared within the permissions you have given.

  • What if my spouse or another family member does not want to participate?

You can continue treatment even if someone close to you is not ready for family counseling. Ridge does not require every family member to attend, and a hesitant relative does not have to participate in every session from the start. Your therapist can continue working with you and recommend involving that person later if their participation would support your treatment goals.

  • Can my family member get counseling for themselves?

Family counseling at Ridge Outpatient Columbus is part of your addiction treatment, so its focus stays on the relationships and family issues affecting your recovery. If your spouse, parent, adult child, or another loved one needs therapy for their own mental health, substance use, or personal concerns, they should have their own provider. The independent Franklin County resources listed above can help them find support outside your treatment.

  • Is family counseling the same as couples counseling?

No. A spouse or partner may participate, but family counseling is broader than couples counseling. Your treatment team looks at which relationships have been affected by addiction and which people could meaningfully support your treatment goals. Depending on that assessment, sessions may involve a partner, parent, child, sibling, another loved one, or different people at different times.

  • Does insurance cover family counseling at Ridge Outpatient Columbus?

Coverage depends on your plan and how family counseling fits into your treatment. At Ridge Outpatient Columbus, family counseling is incorporated into PHP and IOP rather than automatically functioning as a separate standalone service. Ridge is primarily out-of-network with major PPO plans, so the admissions team verifies your benefits and explains your expected coverage and costs before you commit to treatment.
