Cleveland, Ohio Residential Drug Rehab

Cleveland, Ohio, is known for its sports, music, and manufacturing, but like others in the nation, Cleveland is also facing a drug overdose problem right now. The entire state of Ohio has been fighting a prescription drug epidemic since the 1990s, and now as these medications are more closely regulated and harder to obtain, addicts are switching to heroin, fentanyl, and other harder drugs.

Both prescription painkillers and street drugs like heroin are dangerous. Being derivatives of the same substance, these drugs release dopamine in the brain that provides pain relief, causes sedation, slows the central nervous system, and can produce a feeling of euphoria. They also can slow respiration and other functions so drastically that the person is at risk for overdose and death.

In today’s society, prescription painkillers are commonly prescribed to help manage painful conditions. However, when not treated with respect, they are traded, sold, and abused, and lead to dependence and addiction. As individuals get used to the high they get from prescription painkillers, they begin to crave more and turn to other opiates like fentanyl, heroin, or the large animal medication called carfentanil. These other drugs often produce a better high, are easier to obtain, and in most cases, are even less predictable and more dangerous because their contents and filler substances are unknown.
