Is Residential Treatment The Right Choice?

There are many factors to consider when choosing a drug and alcohol treatment program. Philosophy, therapy methods, level of care, length of program, location, financial commitment, and amenities must all be considered when looking for an addiction treatment program. Individuals who go through a professional assessment are the most prepared to choose a rehab program that will be a good fit for them because their needs have already been identified.

Types of Addiction Treatment

There are several different levels of treatment for drug and alcohol addiction. The most structured is inpatient care, during which time the individual is cared for at the facility while they detox or begin rehab. Patients in this level of care are generally new to the recovery program, are at high risk for relapse, and need full-time supervision. This level of treatment usually lasts 30 days or less.

The next level of care is residential treatment. This is the level of care offered by The Ridge. Patients who enroll at a residential treatment center still benefit from around-the-clock supervision but enjoy a home-like atmosphere. Amenities at a residential treatment center are comfortable and welcoming, with clients having the freedom to move around, interact with one another, and enjoy recreation and free time. Residential treatment allows the individual to escape from the pressures of daily life because all their meals are provided, their living situation is stable, and they aren’t forced to interact in stressful relationships. Instead, their focus can be on recovery and how to heal their past and work toward a sober future.

A step down from residential treatment is outpatient therapy. This type of treatment allows the individual to live at home, continue to interact with family members, work, and maintain other commitments. Individuals in outpatient therapy must be stable enough to remain sober even when left on their own and must continue to faithfully attend counseling and rehab sessions. As individuals progress through outpatient therapy, they are able to put into practice what they learned in rehab, and still benefit from the interactions with treatment professionals and peers in recovery.

Finally, anyone who has gone through addiction treatment and recovery should have an established relapse prevention plan. This plan makes up the last and longest stage of recovery: getting back to real life and remaining sober. It is important for the individual to develop a relapse prevention plan while still in rehab so that once they are back out in the world and face temptations and trouble, they are prepared and know what to do.

With the help of skilled therapists, physicians, nurses, and counselors, recovering addicts in residential treatment learn about their addiction, address components and experiences in their past that led to addiction, and develop skills to face the stress and pressures of everyday life.

Residential Treatment Centers

Out of all the levels of care, a residential treatment center is the one where the most progress is usually seen. Individuals enter residential treatment addicted to their substance with their lives out of control. With the help of skilled therapists, physicians, nurses, and counselors, recovering addicts in residential treatment learn about their addiction, address components and experiences in their past that led to addiction, and develop skills to face the stress and pressures of everyday life. Various forms of therapy and individual and group counseling sessions, as well as a healthy diet, exercise, and support group participation, are all tools used to help the recovering addict take control of their life again. When a person leaves residential treatment, if they have faithfully participated in rehab, they will seem like a different person. They will be more stable physically, mentally, and emotionally, and with ongoing support will be able to maintain their sobriety.
